Yesterday marked a significant milestone in our vibrant community of creative professionals and actors in Northern California—the launch of the SAG-AFTRA SF-NC Conservatory’s Screenplay Reading Series. This initiative is designed to cultivate artistic expression and foster collaboration among artists, and the inaugural event certainly set a high bar.
The spotlight was on the compelling screenplay “Forbidden City,” written by Michael Ching and Kelvin Moon Loh. This evocative love story draws inspiration from the real-life experiences of Michael’s parents, Larry Ching and Vicki Lee, who graced the stage of the iconic Forbidden City nightclub in San Francisco during the 1930s. During the reading, attendees were transported to that enchanting era, enriched by the music of Larry Ching, often referred to as “The Chinese Frank Sinatra.” The combination of emotive storytelling and soulful melodies created a truly immersive experience.

Among the attendees was Ben Fong-Torres, renowned Rolling Stone journalist and featured character in Cameron Crowe’s classic film “Almost Famous.” His participation brought an added layer of authenticity and excitement to the room, reminding us of the interconnectedness of our artistic journeys. Hearing his voice resonate along with the script added a unique flavor to the reading that will remain etched in our memories.

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Michael Ching and Kelvin Moon Loh for trusting us with their authentic narrative. Your story has ignited enthusiasm and fostered connections among our members, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of our shared history.
A special acknowledgment goes to all the SAG-AFTRA members who brought “Forbidden City” to life, generating energy and excitement. Your talent and commitment are what make our community thrive. Together, we’re not just reading scripts; we’re weaving a network of possibilities and opportunities for collaboration.

This launch wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of the SAG-AFTRA San Francisco Northern California staff. A big thank you to Sean Taylor, Dee Escobedo, Arceli Natividad, Shinhong Byun, and SF-NC President Kathyrn Howell for their dedication in making this program a reality.
To our Conservatory Committee, it is thrilling to witness our discussions transform into tangible opportunities for growth and creativity. I extend my thanks to committee members Kathy Goodin and Solana Paz for their commitment to reading and nurturing numerous scripts alongside me.
As we look ahead, there are many more scripts, readings, and collaborative ventures on the horizon. We are excited about continuing to connect with all of you in our local artistic community.
The journey of storytelling is never-ending; it invites all of us to contribute our unique voices. Thank you for being part of this experience, and I can’t wait to see where our collective creativity takes us next.
