“The Burden,” is set to premiere at the acclaimed UrbanWorld Film Festival this fall. Between November 1-5, 2023, the festival will be held at New York’s AMC 34th Street and SVA Theatre, a collaboration announced by Variety.
Among the myriad of movies selected for UrbanWorld Film Festival 2023, “The Burden” takes center stage with its timely narrative and compelling performances. Leading the cast is Rajiv Shah, who plays the film’s lead character, Shawn Lee.
“The Burden,” is set in the year 2044, delves into the aftermath of a racist president’s election. In retaliation, affluent Black individuals form a new colony, New World Sankofa, sited in the Andromeda Galaxy. Membership to this newfound sanctuary involves a series of procedures for non-Black people, culminating in a tribunal hearing. The film’s narrative focalizes on Shah as he portrays Shawn Lee, a man well-versed in Black culture, yet misguided in his frequent use of the “n word.” As the tribunal struggles with Shawn’s behavior, they label him an appropriator rather than an appreciator.
The UrbanWorld Film Festival, established in 1997, is a bright stage for storytellers and cinephiles. The festival’s mission revolves around redefining and elevating multicultural constituents’ presence in contemporarily filmed entertainment. In doing so, Urbanworld makes strides towards projecting narratives usually sidestepped by mainstream media.
Expanding its ambition beyond merely films, the festival showcases narratives mirroring the richness of global diversity. “The Burden,” thanks to its powerful storyline and diverse cast, is a testament to this mission, marking it as a standout at the festival’s 2023 edition.
